I am the Founder of Desique Limited, an award winning Creative Design Agency based in Buckley, Flintshire, North Wales. This is a little about how I got here…
After graduating from The North Wales School of Art and Design in Graphic Design and Marketing I spent my early career notching up plenty of work experience at Fitch, Saatchi and Saatchi (Charlotte Street offices) and Ogilvy and Mather where I was lucky enough to bump into the man himself David Ogilvy who happily signed his autobiography for me. It’s still within eye shot in my office to this day and I often read an excerpt or two.
Having made around 5,000 cups of tea and coffee for some of the best creatives in the land and having a couple of seasons squeezing every drop of experience into my commercial portfolio I decided to return home from London to North Wales fully armed for my next commercial role.
I found myself in my first Creative Director role at the age of 24 at an agency in Chester where I was able to build a strong creative department and pitch to great future clients. The internet bubble had blown up to immeasurable proportions and web property was being traded for huge sums of money. Once we all came back down to earth and the web became part of the marketing mix I was keen on delivering true business results to clients rather than a one off portfolio show piece that was only good for the agency.
So Desique was born, my own creation, a results driven design agency based in North Wales. I started small and kept it that way for a few years, weathering a tough recession and delivering results to a client base most of whom are with still with us today. By keeping the business streamlined we can add resource to the size of the project task efficiently thereby keeping client costs realistic. Our client base developed within the branding and packaging vertical where we serviced national brands and local Flintshire and Chester SME’s.
We also spent time in creating our own in house projects at Desique, one of which became highly successful in the online lead generation space. This particular project went from startup up to a multi million pound market leader within 18 months and full sale to a venture capitalist company followed just shy of three years trading.
The process from startup to sale is a topic that I enjoy discussing with clients. How valuable intellectual property is, how to manage fast growth, what are the pitfalls and what you should get right early on in developing your strategy. The experience has been valuable in all respects.
Desique has always been an exciting company for me. Networking and meeting like minded entrepreneurs and creative people who strive to create new goods and services in a chaotic technical world is both interesting and fun.
From small beginnings we have created fantastic business ideas and marketing strategies for clients that have helped grow their business. We’ve been lucky enough to start, grow and sell two businesses that started out as scribbles on a pad in a hotel lounge and I’m immensely proud of our achievements after so many years of helping other businesses do the same.
